A Decision

After landing a solid punch to Miles’s sternum, I took advantage of his shift in balance and knocked out the back of his knee with a sharp heel kick. He toppled backwards, but somehow spun himself to his right and landed on all fours. He flipped further sideways, rolling out of my range, and jumped onto his feet to face me.

I stood stunned. My Miles could barely walk upstairs without tripping over. It had been twenty years, but I couldn’t put together what I was seeing now with what I remembered from the past.

‘Mum! What the hell?’ I heard Sam yell at me, but I couldn’t pay attention to him because Miles was poised and ready to strike. This was all wrong.

I lunged toward Miles and began a physical and dangerous dance that I used to know so well. I faked a move to the left, breaking his stance, then followed up with two punches. The first cracked against his jaw, sending a shooting pain through my knuckles. The second smashed into his stomach, causing the air to escape his lungs. My moves were stilted, but luckily my body still remembered them. As I went in for a hard kick to his chest, he caught my foot just before impact and threw me off balance. I hit the ground hard, but kept rolling to make sure I was out of reach. I pushed up to my feet, my joints straining and grinding from the effort. Then I faced him again.

‘What are you doing, Rachel?’ Miles asked, holding a defensive stance. His voice was even but curious, and it had an unsettling effect. There were so many tiny differences to the Miles I knew.

‘You’re not Miles. Not the Miles I knew and loved.’

‘Of course I am,’ he said with a warm smile. ‘It’s me.’ He stayed perfectly poised in his defensive stance the whole time, never breaking his body’s preparedness to attack. That made up my mind.

I raced at him once again, grabbing a handful of dirt on my way and flung it at his face as I approached. He screamed and reflexively reached up to his eyes, but I was already on him. And then I released my pent-up anger. All the cumulated rage and hurt I had pushed deep down inside me was released in a torrent of blows. My fists and feet flew as they hit their mark again and again. Miles eventually manoeuvred away, then threw all his weight into a tackle that smashed us both into the ground. I felt the sting of his punches against my body as he sat on top of me. He grabbed hold of my hair and ripped it painfully sideways while smashing his other fist into my cheek. I screamed from the pain, but pulled my knee up between us and kicked him off as hard as I could. The force flipped him off me and he released my hair as he tumbled towards the boulders where Lilli and Sam looked on with pure horror on their faces.
